Questions?
What is a motorcycle MOT?
An MOT is a legal check to make sure your motorbike, moped or scooter meets UK road safety and environmental standards. It’s required once your bike is over 3 years old and being used on public roads.
How often do I need a bike MOT?
Every 12 months after your motorbike turns 3 years old. You can check when it’s due using the GOV.UK MOT checker or by checking your bike’s logbook (V5C).
What’s checked during a motorcycle MOT?
We inspect all the key components to ensure your motorbike is safe and road legal, including:
- Lights and indicators
- Steering and suspension
- Brakes
- Wheels and tyres
- Frame and exhaust system
- Horn
- Chain and sprockets (if visible)
- Registration plate, reflectors and number plate positioning
- Noise levels and exhaust emissions (where applicable)
How long does a motorcycle MOT take?
Around 45 minutes to an hour. If your bike needs any work, we’ll talk you through the options before carrying out repairs.
Can I ride my motorbike if the MOT has expired?
No - unless you're on your way to a pre-booked MOT test, it's illegal to ride without a valid MOT. You could face a fine, points on your licence, and your insurance may be invalid.
Can I watch my bike’s MOT test?
Yes - we have a designated viewing area at Auto-Tech Melksham where you can relax while we test your bike.
What should I check before bringing my motorbike for an MOT?
A few simple checks can help avoid a fail:
- Make sure all your lights and indicators work
- Check tyres for wear and correct pressure
- Test the horn
- Make sure the number plate is clean, legal, and securely fitted
- Look for any loose parts or fluid leaks
Is there a grace period after my MOT expires?
No - there’s no grace period. However, you can bring your bike in up to one month (minus a day) before the current MOT expires and still keep the same renewal date next year.
